Its finally summer in the Pacific Northwest! Coming from North Carolina where summer starts around or even before Memorial Day I thought I was going to miss out on summer especially when in mid June I was still wearing jeans and jackets. I was worried I wouldn't get to wear my beloved sun dresses and skirts this year but summer finally came in about mid July. Back east the hottest part of the day is around noon but here it is about four in the afternoon and then quickly drops as the sun begins to set. Here the days are longer as the sun doesn't fully set until closer to 9pm. Summer time here means hiking and camping all of which we have been doing the last 3 weeks. We live in a valley which is relatively flat with views of the Cascade Peaks in the distance. I wish I had taken a picture of my commute each rotation. In Eastern Oregon it was barren rolling wheat fields with an occasional tumble weed and faint glimpses of mountain peaks on a good day. In western Oregon it was flat farm land with foot hills in both directions to and from work. Now in Washington its highway with excessive overpasses and views of Mt Rainer and Mt Baker. There's also much more traffic which I have gotten stuck in unfortunately on more than one occasion. Last Friday it took me a little over an hour and a half to go 13.5 miles.
So to escape the traffic and in hopes to catch a closer view of the big peaks we have gone hiking each weekend. The first weekend we went up to Sauk Mountain to catch a glimpse of Mt Baker in the Northern Cascades.
The second weekend we when hiking and camping around the Mt Rainier Forest.
The 3rd weekend we went to Mt St Helens. It was cloudy so we didn't get a good view of the top but did get to see lots of lava rocks!
